One of the most common questions I hear from expectant parents is "When should I book newborn photos?"

If you are currently pregnant and trying to plan ahead, you're not alone- and you're smart to be thinking about this now. Newborn photography is one of those things that's time-sensitive, but it doesn't have to feel stressful when you know what to expect.

As a Katy newborn photographer, I am sharing exactly when to book, why timing matters, and how the process works so you can feel confident and prepared.

When should you book a newborn photography session?

The best time to book your newborn photography sessions is during your second trimester-ideally between 20-28 weeks pregnant.

Most photographers book a limited number of due dates each month to ensure flexibility when babies arrive. Reserving your session early helps guarantee availability around your due date, especially if you are due during a busy season.

Booking ahead also gives you peace of mind knowing one big decision is already taken care of.

When are Newborn Photos typically taken?

Newborn photography sessions are usually taken within the first 5-14 days after birth.

During this window:

  • Babies are sleepier
  • They are more comfortable being gently posed
  • Sessions tend to flow more smoothly

That said, every baby is different. If your little one arrives early, late, or needs extra time, your photographer should adjust accordingly. I always build flexibility into my newborn schedule, so parents never feel rushed.

What if my baby is early or late?

This is one of the biggest worries parents have-and it is completely valid.

When you book a newborn session, you are not booking the exact date. Instead, you are reserving a time around your due date.

Once your baby arrives, you'll simply reach out and we'll finalize your session date based on how everyone is doing.

If your baby needs extra medical care or you need more recovery time, your session can be adjusted. You're baby's safety and your comfort always come first.

What if I missed the "ideal" newborn window?

If you didn't book during your pregnancy or your baby is already a few weeks old, don't worry- beautiful images are still possible.

While posed newborn photography works best in the first two weeks, older newborn sessions can focus more on:

  • Natural moments
  • Family connections
  • Baby details and expressions

If you are unsure whether it is too late, it is always worth reaching out to ask.

How to prepare for your newborn photography session

One of the biggest benefits of booking your newborn session early is having time to prepare-without feeling overwhelmed.

When you book a newborn session with me, everything needed for your session is provided, including:

  • wraps and simple props
  • Neutral, timeless outfits for baby
  • A calm, baby-led approach

Parents don't need to bring much other than feeding and changing supplies (outfits for themselves if participating in the session) and a willingness to relax

Sessions are calm, baby-led and designed to be as stress free as possible.
